Child Play Therapy
Jennifer Scott, RCC, RSW, BC-DMT
Play is a child's way to learn, have fun, and process their life experiences. Toys are children's vocabulary, since their verbal skills are not fully developed, and play is their language. Play therapy facilitates a child's natural expression and their natural way to process emotional, physical, and mental stress and challenges. Emotions such as anger, hurt, anxiety, fears, confusion, grief, sadness, and so on are worked out through watched play. Play therapy offers a way for children to process beliefs they might have about themselves and their world, to develop new skills, explore values, and develop self-confidence and new coping stategies. With guidance, children are empowered to find their own solutions to problems which can lead to greater success in making appropriate choices and decisions and managing their life problems - both internal responses and outward behavior. My role as a play therapist is to watch, listen, and be carefully present to the child's inner processing revealed through play and to offer oportunities for further exploration and guidance in a safe and non-judgmental environment. I work closely with parents to set and optimize goals and facilitate the healing process for their children.
As a Registered Dance/Movement Therapist I also offer opportunities in the play room for movement and dance exploration to facilitate healing and growth.
